The RT Assistant will play an essential role in assisting RT technicians with the set-up, preparation, and operation of radiographic testing equipment, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and quality standards. Key Responsibilities:
- Support RT Technicians: Assist Radiographic Testing (RT) Level II or Level III technicians in performing radiographic inspections on materials, welds, and components, under the supervision of a certified technician. This includes preparing materials and test specimens for radiographic examination.
- Equipment Preparation and Setup: Help set up radiographic testing equipment, including radiation sources (X-ray and gamma-ray), film or digital imaging systems, and associated accessories. Ensure that equipment is in good working order and ready for use.
- Assist with Film Exposure and Processing: Help with the proper exposure of radiographic films or digital radiographs under the supervision of an RT technician. Assist in the processing and handling of radiographic films, ensuring proper timing, temperature, and procedures are followed.
- Radiation Safety Support: Adhere to strict radiation safety protocols and ensure proper handling of radiographic equipment, radioactive sources, and safety barriers. Assist in monitoring radiation exposure levels and maintaining compliance with safety regulations.
- Maintain Equipment and Tools: Ensure all RT equipment and tools are properly maintained, cleaned according to manufacturer instructions and safety standards. Report any equipment malfunctions or required repairs to the NDT Supervisor or RT Technician.
- Documentation and Record-Keeping: Assist in documenting inspection results, test parameters, and radiographic film or digital image logs. Assist in maintaining accurate records in accordance with company policies and industry standards.
- Organize and Prepare Test Materials: Ensure that all materials, test pieces, and specimens are properly organized and ready for testing. Verify the correct materials are used and prepared according to the specific job requirements.
- Assist in Maintaining Test Areas: Ensure the radiographic testing area is kept organized and free of hazards. Assist in preparing the testing area by securing safety barriers, signage, and ensuring that all unauthorized personnel are clear of radiation exposure zones.
- Continuous Improvement and Learning: Stay updated on new radiographic technologies, safety practices, and industry standards. Assist with internal audits or inspections as needed and support ongoing training to further develop skills in radiographic testing.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Additional technical or vocational training in Nondestructive Testing (NDT), radiography, or a related field is preferred.
- Experience:
- No prior experience is required, but previous exposure to NDT or radiographic testing processes is a plus.
- Experience working with radiographic equipment or safety protocols in an industrial setting is a plus.
- Knowledge of Safety Protocols: Familiarity with radiation safety protocols and regulations is highly desirable. A strong commitment to following safety guidelines to prevent exposure to harmful radiation.
- Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail to ensure that radiographic films are exposed, processed, and recorded accurately, and that safety protocols are strictly followed.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and move heavy equipment, tools, and materials. Ability to stand for long periods and work in potentially challenging environments, including confined spaces or elevated areas.
- Communication Skills: Ability to communicate effectively with team members and supervisors. Ability to follow detailed instructions and provide feedback on equipment or procedures when necessary.
- Technical Aptitude: A general interest in learning about radiographic testing techniques, tools, and technologies. Ability to quickly grasp the fundamentals of RT processes and support technicians effectively.
- Maintain Required Work Schedule: The ability and desire to be available for work as needed to meet our customer’s schedules. This is likely to include overtime and variable work shifts.
Desired Skills:
- Radiographic Safety Training: Completion of basic radiographic safety training or certifications such as 40 Hour Radiation Safety Training is a plus.
- NDT Familiarity: Basic understanding of nondestructive testing methods, particularly radiographic testing, is desirable.
- Team-Oriented: Ability to work well in a team environment, collaborate effectively with other NDT personnel, and contribute to achieving quality inspection goals.
